Outdoor athletes—particularly student-athletes—are especially vulnerable, with thousands suffering time-loss heat illnesses annually. This risk is driven by rising temperatures and frequent extreme weather events. According to CDC data from 2005–2009, high school athletes experienced an estimated average of 9,200 time-loss heat illnesses per year, mostly in August, and especially in football—by far the most affected sport.

Athletes have been playing games on natural grass since the beginning of man, making the use of synthetic sporting surfaces a recent concept by comparison. According to the National Library of Medicine, “the first synthetic turf at a major sporting event occurred in Houston, Texas, at the Astrodome in 1966.”

Water features should be the focal point of the spaces they occupy on your campus, but maintaining them should not occupy an inordinate amount of staff time or labor. While nothing is maintenance free, well-designed pump and filtration systems can make the difference between a working, beautiful fountain or waterfall and an unsightly, dried-up hole.
